Health Protection Agency (HPA) on Thursday began work to gather opinion of relevant authorities regarding the National Policy on Medical Waste Management.
In April this year, HPA endorsed the national policy on medical waste management, compiled with the technical assistance of WHO.
HPA has also drafted a 5-year strategic plan on implementing the policy based on recommendation by government authorities.
Under the plan, HPA on Thursday held a session to obtain opinion from relevant stakeholders on the policy.
Speaking at the meeting, Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim said that establishment of proper waste management system is a top priority of the government.
“The Environment Ministry will provide technical assistance to HPA to implement the strategic plan,” he said.
Speaking at the meeting, Health Minister Abdul Nazim Ibrahim said that lack of a proper waste management policy at healthcare service facilities is dangerous, and could pose major challenges.
He also announced that a pilot project worth US$200,000 is planned to be initiated in Laamu Atoll under the policy.
