Workshop on preventing marine pollution in South Asia concludes

A workshop on drawing up a regional plan to prevent marine pollution in South Asia concluded in the Maldives Thursday.

Five countries from the South Asian region participated in the 4-day workshop that aimed at preventing, reducing and controlling the pollution of the marine environment from oil and chemical spills.

The workshop, which was attended by Maldives, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, also saw a table-top exercise on how the countries would act in case of an oil spill.

A number of workshops have been held in the past two years with the aim of establishing national and regional level contingency plans.

The workshop was facilitated by experts from the International Maritime Organisation, South Asian Corporative Environment Programme and International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation Organisation.
