Home Minister slams opposition over “overthrow attempt” report

Azleen Ahmed, Minister of Home Affairs, on Thursday assured the public that any attempt to overthrow the government would be thwarted. Commenting on a BBC report about a plot to remove President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom from power, Azleen Ahmed said “any attempt to overthrow an elected government is unconstitutional, and any such talk is illegal.”

Citing innumerous development projects undertaken since the government came to power in November 2013, he accused the opposition of working to obstruct the country’s development. He said the sole aim of President Yameen’s government was to deliver much-needed development.

Noting that public support for the government remained “at an all-time high”, Azleen said the government was working tirelessly to provide for the people, and that the people were reaping the benefits of the government’s developmental efforts. He said the government had ensured peace and stability, revived economic growth, increased business sector growth and created a large number of jobs.

The BBC report citing various sources said President Yameen was facing a ‘removal plot’ by the opposition. Responding to claims made in the report, Home Minister Azleen Ahmed said the Constitution clearly dictates how and when a government can be removed from power. He condemned reports of the planned overthrow, and said the government will respond appropriately to any such attempt.

Stressing that the country’s security forces remain steadfast and loyal to the government, Azleen said rumours about the planned overthrow of the government is spread by the opposition, which he described as “enemies of the state”.

Speaking further on the matter, he slammed opposition leaders, who are in self-imposed exile, for making “baseless and false” statements to the international media, adding that their sole purpose was “creating fear and divisions amongst the general public”.

He further assured the public that the government remains strong and committed to serve in the best interest of the public.

He further called the opposition and their actions “undemocratic”, and warned that such “unlawful” action, including attempts to overthrow the government, will be stopped. He further warned that no room will be allowed for political activities conducted outside constitutional bounds.
