Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Special Envoy and Minister of Civil Aviation, Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu has reaffirmed that India will continue to provide assistance to the Maldives in attracting investors and expanding its economy.
He made the remarks while speaking at the official opening ceremony of the Hanimaadhoo International Airport on Sunday.
Minister Naidu said the Hanimaadhoo International Airport project represents not only a milestone of infrastructural progress, but also a testament to the enduring partnership between India and the Maldives. He expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure for their support in the successful completion of the project.
The Minister further said the Hanimaadhoo Airport Project demonstrates the Maldivian government’s commitment to sustainable development. The opening of the airport will connect the northern Maldives to the rest of the world and drive significant economic growth in the region. He added that India would always be ready to assist the Maldives in its efforts to expand its economy.
"As Maldives continues its journey for the expansion of its economy, India stands ready to work hand in hand in expanding trade and investment corridors. Towards this endeavour, we are looking towards an early conclusion of the bilateral free trade agreement and the bilateral investment treaty,” he said.
The Minister further highlighted the importance of a strong transport system to achieve comprehensive development. He noted that new opportunities in transportation between the Maldives and India will further connect the businesses and people in both countries.
Developed by India’s JMC, the project’s practical work began in January 2022 for a total value of USD 136.6 million. The development of Hanimaadhoo International Airport was completed after three years and is closely linked to the growth and development of the northern region. The project represents a significant milestone, reflecting the hopes and aspirations of the local community.
Hanimaadhoo International Airport features a 2,465-metre runway capable of accommodating the largest Code C aircraft, including Boeing 737s and Airbus A320s. The newly developed apron can accommodate nine aircraft simultaneously — three Airbus planes and six ATR aircraft. The airport also includes a modern cargo terminal, and an air traffic control tower.
The terminal, spanning 10,380 square metres, is divided between domestic and international flights, with the first floor dedicated for domestic flights, and upper floors for international flights. Each floor will feature two gates. Hanimaadhoo Airport is the first atoll airport in the Maldives to feature an aero bridge.
Designed to reflect the natural beauty of the Maldives, the airport has the capacity to serve 1.3 million passengers annually.
