United States Becomes Seventh-Largest Source of Visitors to Maldives as Arrivals Surge

Beyond the Maldives’ primary European and Asian markets, the United States has emerged as the seventh-largest source of international visitors, according to statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment. During the reporting period, the number of US tourists surpassed 50,000, reaching a total of 51,021 and accounting for 2.9 percent of all arrivals.

According to the ministry’s data, the Maldives has recorded a 10 percent increase in tourist arrivals compared with the same period last year. This sustained growth brings the country closer to achieving its annual target of 2.3 million visitors. As of 21 October, total arrivals stood at 1,763,319. To meet the government’s stated goal, approximately 600,000 additional tourists are required before year-end. The current average daily arrival rate, exceeding 6,000, suggests that the country remains on a steady trajectory.

The surge in arrivals continues to be concentrated among the top five international source markets. China maintains its position as the leading contributor, with 287,274 tourists. Russia follows with 216,621 arrivals, while the United Kingdom accounts for 155,136. Germany and Italy round out the group, contributing 129,477 and 117,614 visitors respectively. These figures underscore the enduring strength of both Asian and European demand, even as North American interest gains momentum.

Accommodation trends reflect the Maldives’ reputation as a luxury destination. The vast majority of tourists opted to stay in resorts, which accounted for 73.7 percent of all visitor stays during the reporting period. Guesthouses were the second most popular choice, capturing 21.5 percent of the market share. The data suggest that while alternative lodging options are gaining modest traction, high-end hospitality remains the dominant draw.
