The Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) has announced the opening of re-registration for eligible voters wishing to participate in the upcoming referendum on the composition of the Addu City Council.
The landmark vote, set to decide on whether to create separate councils within Addu City, has been scheduled for 25 October.
The opportunity to re-register a polling station, particularly for those who wish to cast their vote at a location different from their current registration, commenced today. Voters have until 6:00 pm Thursday to submit their re-registration requests.
According to the EC, eligible voters are currently registered at the polling stations where they cast their ballots during last year's parliamentary elections.
Specific provisions have been outlined for certain areas - individuals registered in Hulhumale' and Villimale' will automatically be registered in Male'. Voters who were previously registered in an island or location other than their permanent residential island, with the exceptions of Feydhoo, Hulhudhoo, and Meedhoo in Addu City, as well as Male', Hulhumale', and Villimale', have had their registrations transferred to their permanent addresses.
The ECM has strongly urged all eligible voters to verify their registered polling station and to utilise this re-registration window if they intend to vote at an alternative location.
Polling for the referendum will be held from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturday, 25 October.
The inaugural vote under the newly enacted General Referendum Act will seek the views of residents in Addu's Hulhudhoo, Meedhoo, and Feydhoo wards regarding a proposed change in the composition of the Addu City Council.
