A religious symposium kicked off in Bandos Island Resort Friday evening.
The “Research Symposium on Thought and Epistemology” is organised by Islamic University of the Maldives (IUM) and International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT).
A total of 50 religious scholars from 10 countries across South Asia are attending the symposium, including scholars from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and Bosnia.
Speaking at the inauguration of the symposium, Home Minister Azleen Ahmed expressed hope of strengthening relations between the countries, especially in matters related to religion.
He also highlighted the achievements made by the government in the education sector.
He said that “undoubtedly without quality research, innovation and invention are incredible. Today it is more imperative than ever before to establish the private universities in the Maldives due to the irruptive evolution of university education in the Maldives”.

Speaking at the function, Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, Vice Chancellor of IUM, noted the importance of spreading Islamic knowledge and religious education, and building a religiously aware society.
He also highlighted ways in which the university can further improve its programmes, which he said are highly dependent on research.
The symposium is set to come to a close Sunday.
