President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed two members to the Tax Appeal Tribunal, in accordance with the Tax Administration Act.
The President appointed Ibrahim Afeef as a member of the Tax Appeal Tribunal and Shaufa Ibrahim as the member representing the legal field in the Tribunal. Both will serve for the remainder of the current term, which is due to expire on 28 November.
The President appointed the members to the Tribunal following Parliament’s review and approval. During the parliamentary debate, several Members of Parliament expressed concern over the appointment of members so close to the expiry of their terms. They suggested that the law should be amended to avoid such appointments if the quorum of the tribunal can still be met.
Under current regulations, if a position on the Tax Appeal Tribunal becomes vacant, a member must be elected within 60 days of the vacancy.
