The Parliament has approved the appointment of Ibrahim Afeef and Shaufa Ibrahim to the Tax Appeal Tribunal.
The appointment follows two vacancies on the tribunal. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu had submitted seven nominees to the Parliament from among the candidates that applied for the positions. The Judiciary Committee conducted interviews with the nominees and assigned marks based on their performance.
According to the committee’s report, four candidates, Mahaz Ali Zahir, Ibrahim Afeef, Shaufa Ibrahim and Ahmed Yaameen, scored more than 75 percent.
In a vote held on the Parliament floor, Ibrahim Afeef and Shaufa Ibrahim were unanimously approved for appointment to the tribunal. They will serve for the remainder of the current term, which is due to expire on 28 November.
Several Members of Parliament expressed concern over the appointment of members so close to the expiry of their terms. They suggested that the law should be amended to avoid such appointments if the quorum of the tribunal can still be met.
Under current regulations, if a position on the Tax Appeal Tribunal becomes vacant, a member must be elected within 60 days of the vacancy.
