Catch Quality, Earnings Rise with New Cooling Systems, Hirilandhoo Fishermen Tell Minister Shiyam

Ahmed Shiyam, Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, has concluded a targeted working visit to Hirilandhoo, Thaa Atoll, to assess the operational performance of Refrigerated Seawater (RSW) systems installed on fishing vessels under a national initiative to modernise the fisheries sector.

The visit formed part of the government’s broader strategy to address structural challenges within the industry. Hirilandhoo, which accounts for the highest number of RSW-equipped vessels under the programme, served as a focal point for the minister’s evaluation.

Accompanied by technical staff and financiers of the initiative, Minister Shiyam conducted on-site inspections aboard vessels fitted with the ice-producing systems. The delegation observed the units in operation and engaged directly with local fishermen to solicit feedback on their effectiveness.

Minister Shiyam underscored the strategic importance of the technology in preserving catch quality from harvest to sale. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing operational standards across the sector, noting that the systems offer critical advantages by maintaining fish at a consistent temperature until weighing or offloading.

Fishermen on the island reported significant improvements in product quality and confirmed that the systems had contributed to increased income. Several noted that the technology had resolved longstanding challenges in preserving catch, particularly during extended voyages or delays in offloading.

The visit also encompassed a dedicated fisheries forum, convened to discuss the sector’s future trajectory and reinforce the importance of sustainable development. Stakeholders exchanged perspectives on advancing the industry through innovation and policy support.

Concluding the itinerary, the minister inspected local fish markets, reviewing operations and meeting with vendors.
