President Pledges to Help Hangnaameedhoo Develop Uthuruathafaru After Integration

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has unveiled a comprehensive development agenda for Hangnaameedhoo, Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, pledging government assistance for various infrastructure projects and announcing the integration of Uthuruathafaru as part of the island.

The announcements were made during a community meeting with Hangnaameedhoo residents during his visit to the island on Tuesday as part of his ongoing visit to the Atoll, where the President addressed residents and highlighted the government's commitment to enhancing local communities.

A key promise from President Dr Muizzu was the formal inclusion of Uthuruathafaru, near Hangnaameedhoo, into the island’s administrative jurisdiction.

"We will issue a decree very soon to declare Uthuruathafaru as part of this island. The government will provide the necessary assistance for development," he affirmed, noting the scarcity of designated tourist areas in the Atoll where Alikoirah has recently been dedicated as picnic island as part of broader efforts to boost local tourism.

During the meeting, the President emphasised the importance of education, acknowledging the signing of an agreement for the construction of a new building and a multi-purpose hall for Hangnaameedhoo School. This project is aimed at alleviating space constraints and fostering a better learning environment for students.

Beyond education, President Dr Muizzu reiterated pledges for critical infrastructure, including shore protection and the establishment of a dedicated boat yard.

"These projects will be carried out according to the wishes of the people," he stated, reinforcing his commitment to resident preferences.

The President also assured the prioritisation of sports facilities and other amenities for the island’s youth, recognising their crucial role in community development.

With local tourism expanding in Hangnaameedhoo, which has a population of approximately 700 people and primarily relies on this sector, the government is also focused on providing additional facilities to support this growth.

In a significant announcement for businesses and tourists, President Dr Muizzu revealed plans to establish a dollar ATM in Hangnaameedhoo, giving priority to islands with high bed capacities.

The President during his visit, officially inaugurated the newly built island council secretariat building and witnessed the groundbreaking on the new Police station, fitness and recreation centre and the volleyball court in Hangnaameedhoo.

During the visit, President Dr Muizzu also met with the Hangnaameedhoo Island Council, the Women’s Development Committee, and heads of local institutions to discuss the island’s key development priorities.

The Council members highlighted the most pressing needs of the island’s residents. They emphasised the necessity of upgrading the north harbour, developing roads with proper drainage systems, protecting the shoreline, resolving breakwater issues, and creating a designated area for boat docking. They also called for the improvement of the island’s health centre and laboratory facilities, as well as the expedited development of the football ground.

President Dr Muizzu assured that the Government would give due consideration to their concerns.
