President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has assured that the school project currently underway in Fenfushi, Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, to address space constraints, will reach completion before the start of the upcoming academic year. He made the announcement while meeting with the residents of Fenfushi as part of his ongoing tour of the atoll.
In his remarks, the President said in addition to the completion of the school project, the government would also launch a separate project to develop a multipurpose hall and install air conditioning in classrooms.
As part of the President’s visit, several new projects were officially launched on the island. These include the construction of a new police building, a health centre building, a waste and resource management centre, as well as the development of a volleyball court, a running track around the football field, construction of a 300-person mosque as well as a boatyard.
The Police building project was contracted to the Road Development Corporation (RDC), while the volleyball court, running track, and boatyard were contracted to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company Limited (MTCC). Meanwhile, the mosque project was handed over to K&F Holding Pvt Ltd. In addition, Bank of Maldives (BML) ATM service in Fenfushi was also officially launched as part of the visit.
Highlighting these initiatives, President Muizzu announced that quay wall construction would also be undertaken, and that the mosque project would include a funeral house. He added that the health centre project would proceed with adjustments to its scope, ensuring the seamless transfer of services from the existing facility to the new building, and sufficient space to meet the island’s healthcare needs.
The President reaffirmed the swift completion of all projects, and emphasised that all these projects have been initiated with priority and determination, reflecting the government’s strong commitment to accelerating development and delivering tangible results for the people.
Speaking regarding the beach protection project, the President said the design of the project will be revised to better reflect the needs of the island’s residents.
Referring to the halted water and sewerage project in Fenfushi, the President noted that many islands across the country face similar issues. He explained that although these projects were contracted to a private company, work has not resumed despite continuous efforts by the relevant ministries of the current administration. Consequently, the government has decided to terminate the existing agreements and move forward with the projects through alternative means, he said, assuring residents that a lasting solution would soon be implemented.
Highlighting the work being done in the field of sports, the President said that a running track will be established on the island under the newly signed agreement. He added that lighting will be installed in the football stadium to enable use at night.
With a population of over 1200, Fenfushi covers an area of approximately 40 hectares.
