Gov’t Targets Completion of Hankede Tourism Project This Term

Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim has stated that the government aims to complete the Hankede tourism project and bring the island to operation before the end of the current presidential term.

The Minister made the statement amid growing public concern over the government’s plans for Hankede.

The previous administration had intended to develop Addu City’s Hankede as a real estate development project. Under the efforts, a bridge was built to separate the link road that passes through the island. Despite this, the island’s development could not be initiated. Following repeated delays, the President decided to re-designate Hankede for a tourism development project, and repealed the designation of Hankede as a tourism real estate development project zone. This repeal was formalised on Wednesday through a Presidential Decree.

Providing details on the President’s decision, the Tourism Minister explained that although the government initially planned to develop Hankede as a halal tourism project, the concept has since been abandoned. Instead, the government now aims to develop the island under an integrated tourism concept, he said.

Minister Thoriq revealed that the Ministry is now working to open the island for development through a public tender. He said the government aims to start the practical work this year and bring the island into operation within the current term.

The Minister said the halal tourism initiative will be shifted to Dhonhera, a newly reclaimed island from the Meedhoo lagoon. However, he did not provide further details.

Tourism development in Addu City is a key presidential pledge. The government had previously attempted to continue the Hankede real estate project but was unable to achieve progress.
