Maldives Sees Double-Digit Tourism Growth as Arrivals Top 1.6 Million

Tourist arrivals in the Maldives have surpassed 1.6 million for the year to date, reflecting a 12.7 percent increase over the same period last year and placing the island nation on a firm trajectory toward its stated goal of 2.2 million visitors by year-end.

Figures released by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment show that 1,619,497 international travellers entered the country as of 27 September, up from 1,476,894 during the corresponding period in 2024. The data indicate a steady influx, with an average of 5,998 arrivals per day.

To meet the government’s target, approximately 600,000 additional visitors are required before the end of the year. Authorities remain confident that current trends will sustain the pace.

An analysis of inbound markets places China at the forefront, contributing 258,679 arrivals. Russia ranks second with 196,594 visitors, followed by the United Kingdom (143,761), Germany (112,834), and Italy (111,584).

Accommodation preferences continue to favour the nation’s signature resorts, which host 73.5 percent of all tourists. Guesthouses have gained traction, accounting for 21.8 percent of stays, while hotels represent a modest 2.6 percent share, according to ministry data.

To support this volume, the Maldives currently operates 1,276 registered tourist facilities, offering a combined bed capacity of 64,719.
