Maldivian Ministers Depart for UNGA 80 High-Level Week

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Abdulla Khaleel and the Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim have departed for New York to participate in the High-Level Week of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 80).

The ministers, who left on Saturday, are set to engage in a series of crucial high-level meetings and events during their visit, with the High-Level Week commencing on 22 to 30 September and the general debate scheduled from 23 to 29 September.

Foreign Minister Dr Khaleel confirmed his attendance via social media, noting the significance of this year's session as it marks the 60th anniversary of Maldives' membership in the United Nations. He expressed optimism for a successful session, reiterating Maldives’ commitment to strengthening the multilateral system through active engagement.

During their time at the UN, Minister Dr Khaleel is slated to address the General Assembly debate. The Maldivian delegation will also host two significant side events. One initiative, titled "Digital Transformation for Sustainable Development," will be held in collaboration with Estonia, highlighting innovative solutions for global progress.

Additionally, the Ministry of Tourism and Environment will organise an event focusing on "Decades of Paris Agreement: Maldives Climate Action and Partnerships for Resilience," underscoring the nation's commitment to tackling climate change.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said these engagements provide invaluable opportunities to further strengthen diplomatic relations between the Maldives, fellow UN Member States, and the wider multilateral community.

Maldives recently secured one of the five Vice-Presidency slots allocated to the Asia-Pacific region for the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, further elevating its role and influence within the international body.
