Foreign Ministry Cautions Maldivians Over Nepal’s Escalating Protests

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a travel advisory calling on citizens to suspend all non-essential travel to Nepal, citing widespread protests and a deteriorating security climate. The advisory, released Tuesday, draws particular attention to the capital, Kathmandu, where curfews have been imposed across several districts.

The ministry described the situation as volatile and urged Maldivians residing in or planning to visit Nepal to exercise extreme caution. Citizens are instructed to comply with directives from Nepali authorities, the Maldivian High Commission in India, and the Foreign Ministry itself. Among the key recommendations is the avoidance of areas experiencing civil unrest, with an emphasis on prioritising personal safety.

Conditions in Kathmandu have prompted additional concern. With curfews in effect, Maldivians, especially students enrolled in academic programmes, are advised to restrict outdoor movement to essential activities and remain alert to developments affecting their well-being.

The ministry stated that it is working in coordination with the Maldivian High Commission in India and relevant Nepali agencies to ensure the security of Maldivian nationals. Support measures are being tailored to meet the needs of students during this period of heightened risk.

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring the situation closely. Should conditions worsen, the ministry said it stands ready to provide assistance and will continue to track the welfare of citizens in Nepal.

To facilitate communication, contact details have been provided for those requiring support. Maldivians may reach the High Commission in India at +91 9910040786 or contact the Foreign Ministry’s dedicated hotline at +960 7983400.
