Maldives Aims to Strengthen Aquaculture Sector with Chinese Partnership

The Maldives Marine Research Institute (MMRI) and China's Fujian Fisheries Institute have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to boost the island nation's aquaculture sector.

The agreement, signed during an official visit by the Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam to China, is a significant step towards developing mariculture as a key industry in the Maldives.

The main objective of the MoU is to promote research and development in aquaculture, introduce modern technology, and ensure the sustainable management of the Maldives' marine environment and resources.

According to the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, the agreement reflects the shared commitment of both countries to responsible marine and resource management.

Mohamed Shimal, the Director General of the MMRI, signed the agreement on behalf of the Maldives with Minister Shiyam also in attendance, highlighting the government's strong support for the initiative.

The Ministry emphasised that this partnership will strengthen scientific and technical cooperation between the two nations, which is crucial for the sustainable utilisation of marine life.

This MoU is a key milestone in fulfilling a major goal of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's administration - the expansion of the Maldivian fishing industry and the development of mariculture as a standalone economic sector. The agreement is expected to play a vital role in achieving this strategic objective.
