President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Sunday extended his congratulations and encouragement to the Maldives national football team, currently competing in the South Asian Super Cup 2025. His message was conveyed in a telephone call to the team’s head coach, Mohamed Shiyaz, following their commanding 3-0 victory in the tournament’s opening match.
The president praised the squad’s performance in Saturday’s fixture, urging the players to remain focused and resolute as they progress through the competition. He highlighted the importance of unity and national pride, encouraging the team to pursue distinguished honours and elevate the reputation of Maldivian football, according to a statement by the President’s Office.
Coach Shiyaz, reflecting on the call, described the president’s outreach as a powerful source of motivation. He affirmed the team’s commitment to meeting the expectations set forth and expressed confidence in their ability to deliver strong performances in the matches ahead. With their opening win, the Maldives national team enters the second leg of the tournament, scheduled for Tuesday, with a strategic three-goal advantage.
Beyond the tournament, President Muizzu’s administration has outlined a broader initiative aimed at revitalising football across the country. Central to this effort is the development of new sports infrastructure in Malé and across various atolls, designed to strengthen athletic programmes and restore the sport’s prominence nationwide.
