Nasheed to Dissolve The Democrats, Rejoin MDP

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has decided to dissolve The Democrats, the political party formed under his leadership.

The decision was made during a sitting of the party’s National Assembly on Tuesday, where a resolution to dissolve the party was passed by a majority vote.

The resolution stated the best way to restore confidence in the multi-party political system is to have a strong opposition movement. It further recognised the need for broad cooperation to achieve this goal, and thus resolved to join the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Several senior leaders members had already resigned from The Democrats in recent months.

The Democrats was formed in the lead-up to the 2023 presidential, following internal disputes after Nasheed’s defeat in the MDP presidential primary. According to the Election Commission of the Maldives, the Democrats have 3,667 registered members.
