Civil Service Commission (CSC) and Dhivehi Language Academy on Sunday signed an agreement on promoting the Dhivehi language.
Under the agreement, CSC would work to protect, develop, preserve and promote the use of the national language, Dhivehi, as per the National Language (Priority) Act.
The commission said it would ensure that all communications and correspondences of the commission comply with Dhivehi language usage rules and guidelines.
It added that it would also conduct Dhivehi language training programmes through the Civil Service Training Institute.
The agreement was signed by President of CSC Dr. Ali Shameem and Language Academy President Ashraf Ali.
Speaking after signing the agreement, Dr. Shameem highlighted the importance of promoting the national language. Ashraf Ali also said the agreement would pave way for the Language Academy to assist the commission in promoting Dhivehi language.
The National Language (Priority) Act came into effect on May 11, 2011, and stipulates that all State communications and correspondences should be in Dhivehi while not restricting the use of other languages in communicating with people who do not speak Dhivehi.
The Dhivehi Language Academy was constituted under the legislation.
