“Housing & Household Characteristics” report published

Housing Minister Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Thursday said that Government-funded development projects are ongoing in all inhabited islands across the country.

He made the remarks while speaking at a ceremony held at Champa Hotel to launch the Statistical Release on Housing and Household Characteristics, which is the sixth issue of a series of statistical publications on 2014 Census results.

The report provides a brief analysis of the issues with detailed statistical tables as well as concepts and definitions used in the Census. Previous Statistical Releases consist of;

I: Population and Households,

II: Migration,

III: Education,

IV: Employment; and

V: Nuptiality and Fertility. Each of these is accompanied by a short video and a leaflet.

Dr. Muizzu said that the report shows that a majority of the country’s population resides in Malé City, and noted that the government is carrying out various development projects in Male and Hulhumalé to improve the living conditions.

The report includes details of household buildings, including construction of homes, amount of food and water used by households as well as how households manage waste.

The Population and Housing Census of Maldives is the largest national statistical exercise and provide the most comprehensive source of information on population and households. Maldives has been conducting censuses since 1911 with the first modern census conducted in 1977. Censuses were conducted every five years from 1985 to 2000. The 2005 census was delayed to 2006 due to the tsunami of 2004, leaving a gap of 8 years between the last two censuses. The 2014 marks the 29th census conducted in the Maldives. The Census provides a statistical portrait of the country at the reference time and serves as a benchmark for demographic, economic and social statistics at the island level.
