Severe weather is due to southwest monsoon, says Met Office

Southwest monsoon is bringing heavy rain and strong winds to all parts of the country, Maldives Meteorological Service says.

The Met Office said that tidal surges experienced in some parts of the country are also related to the monsoon, and forecasts tidal surges between Lhaviyani and Addu atolls.

According to the weather office, scattered rain with isolated heavy showers and thunderstorms would be experienced in central and southern atolls, while few showers are expected in northern atolls.

Surface winds will vary between west / north-westerly 6 – 16 miles per hour in southern atolls and 13 - 23 miles per hour elsewhere. Winds may gust 45 miles per hour during showers, the weather office said.

It added that seas are expected to be rough in central atolls and moderate becoming rough during showers elsewhere.

Authorities urged seafarers to exercise caution and take all necessary safety measures prior to venturing out on journeys. Vessels are also advised to inform the authorities of their travel plans and to check the weather forecast before planning their trips.
