MMA begins removing old banknotes from circulation

Teams would visit the atolls to facilitate exchange of old banknotes with the new Ran Dihafaheh notes, Maldives Monetary Authority says.

The central bank said it noticed that old notes are still in circulation in some islands of Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, Shaviyani, Noonu and Raa atolls. It said teams will also travel to other islands which do not have Bank of Maldives (BML) outlets.

The bank said MVR3.12 billion in Ran Dhihafaheh notes have been released into circulation, since the introduction of the new banknote series as part of the Golden Jubilee of National Independence last year. The new banknote series was released into circulation on January 26 this year.

The deadline to use old banknotes is set to expire at the end of July, and the central bank said it is trying to exchange the remaining 10% of old notes in circulation before the end of the month, except the old MVR5 note.

The bank also made arrangements to exchange old notes for new ones at local banks till the end of the year. It would also exchange old notes for a period of 5 years.
