President Defends Israeli Passport Ban, Calling It a 'Resolute Stance' on Palestine

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has commended the government's decision to bar entry for holders of Israeli passports, describing it as a resolute and principled stance in the nation's history. The move, he stated, aligns with the Maldives' foreign policy, which prioritises national interests, safeguards sovereignty, and fosters international cooperation for the benefit of the country and its people.

At a press conference at the President's Office, President Muizzu underscored the Maldives' longstanding commitment to Palestinian rights. The ban took effect on 15 April following his ratification of the third amendment to the Maldives Immigration Act, enacted shortly after its passage by Parliament.

Government officials have characterised the measure as a response to Israel's human rights violations and genocide against the Palestinian population. By prohibiting entry to Israeli passport holders, the Maldives aims to formalise its opposition to these actions.

Diplomatic efforts have accompanied the legislative move, with the government reinforcing its stance across international platforms. President Muizzu has called for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders, inclusive of East Jerusalem, and has advocated for Palestine's full membership in the United Nations.
