IGMH Confirms MDRO Outbreak Contained in NICU

The Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has assured the public that the recent outbreak of a multidrug-resistant organism (MDRO) in its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) has been contained.

The bacteria, identified as Burkholderia species, was first detected on March 27 in a sample from a child in the NICU. The infant was immediately isolated, and strict infection control protocols were put in place.

Subsequent testing revealed four additional cases among ventilated infants. All affected babies are currently being monitored in isolation, with treatments tailored to their clinical condition. Environmental testing is ongoing to identify the source of contamination.

Since March 27, 84 children have been admitted to the NICU. Ten are currently under care, with five being treated for infection.

No new cases have been reported since April 15. IGMH says arrangements are underway to send the infected children abroad for further treatment and emphasized that all necessary precautions are being taken to ensure patient safety.
