Maldivian Passport and ID Card Issuance Service Launched in Malaysia

The Maldives has launched its first oversees passport and identity card issuance service in Malaysia. This marks the first time such services are available outside of the Maldives.

The service was officially launched in Malaysia by the President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during his ongoing official visit to the country. Following the launch, identity cards and passports were handed over to the two recipients by the Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihsan.

The government is gives special priority to making such services easily available in Malaysia, where a significant number of Maldivians reside for work and education. While the identity card is linked to many essential services, efforts are underway to launch the identity card and passport issuance services in other countries frequented by Maldivians.

In addition to Malaysia, the service will soon be launched in Sri Lanka, India and the United Kingdom. The government also aims to make the service available in all inhabited islands of Maldives by the end of this year.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu is accompanied by a high-level delegation of cabinet members and government officials during his visit to Malaysia, undertaken at the invitation of Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The visit seeks to further strengthen the long-standing ties between the two nations and sign final memorandums of understanding (MoUs) in key areas related to cooperation.
