President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the numerous initiatives launched by his Administration will see the fisheries industry grow threefold in the near future.
Speaking during the fourth episode of the ‘Rayyithunnaa Eku’ podcast, President Dr Muizzu outlined several strategic projects aimed at enhancing the value chain of fish and fish products.
According to the President, a key development is the expansion of skipjack tuna storage capacity, which is set to increase from the current 9,500 tonnes to 25,000 tonnes. In parallel, processing capacity will see a significant rise from 115 tonnes to 355 tonnes, he added.
President Dr Muizzu provided assurances that these projects are fully resourced and will proceed without interruption.
"The cold storage in Thinadhoo will be completed this year which is a huge project. 4,000 tonnes of cold storage in Felivaru is underway under an Indian loan. It will be completed by mid-year. Includes work on a facility. We have started work on a 3,000 tonne facility in Fioaree and a 1,500 tonne fish processing facility in Nilandhoo," he explained.
In addition, the construction of a 500 tonne facility in Mulah, Mee Atoll is underway along with a 400 tonne cold storage facility in Kooddoo.
The President has also inaugurated a 2,000 tonne processing plant and cold storage project in Ihavandhoo, Haa Alifu Atoll earlier this year, while the yellowfin tuna processing plant in Hulhumale’ is a priority project of this Administration.
Addressing the persistent challenges facing the fishing community, particularly reliable access to fuel and ice, the President noted that substantial improvements are being undertaken through infrastructure development and resource allocation.
He emphasised that his Administration's approach is grounded in direct consultation with fishermen. By the end of this year, he confirmed that every atoll will have designated islands offering fuel at State Trading Organisation (STO) rates while construction of ice plants, cold storage facilities, and processing centres across numerous islands is advancing rapidly.
Highlighting Refrigerated Sea Water (RSW) systems as critical to the sector's future, the President announced the availability of additional loan schemes to support their adoption.
President assured that fishermen will see tangible benefits from the government initiatives within these two years.
