The Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology has requested foreign nationals in the Maldives who have not yet completed their biometrics to do so by the end of this month.
The Ministry noted that several employers registered in the Expat system have not completed the biometrics processing of the foreign workers under their sponsorship. The Ministry urged employers to update the work permit status of their employees before 30 April. Employers who fail to complete biometric processing within this period will be suspended from the Expat system, and affected employers will no longer have access to related services.
The initiative is part of broader efforts by the Government to solve the issue of undocumented migrants in the Maldives. While a special operation titled Operation Kurangi has been launched to collect information on foreigners, the operation is being conducted by establishing a system within local councils to collect biometric data from foreign nationals. The data of over 100,000 migrant workers has been collected thus far to date.
The government aims to bring a permanent solution to the issue of illegal migrants in Maldives by April 2027. More than 6,700 illegal migrants have been deported, according to the Ministry.
