President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the essential role of the Dhivehi language in defining and preserving Maldivian identity, describing its relevance as timeless and integral across eras.
Marking Dhivehi Language Day—an annual observance held on 14 April—President Dr Muizzu issued a statement through social media, highlighting the language's foundational significance to Maldivian culture. In his message, he characterised the Dhivehi language as the backbone of the nation's identity and expressed optimism regarding its ability to thrive amid societal and technological progress.
The president's remarks coincided with this year's theme, 'Iskuraanee Dhivehi Bas' (translated: [We] Will Prioritise the Dhivehi Language), chosen by the Dhivehi Language Academy to underscore the enduring importance of linguistic heritage.
Since its establishment in 2015, Dhivehi Language Day has served as a platform for celebrating the Maldives' linguistic and cultural heritage. Under President Dr Muizzu's administration, efforts to revitalise Dhivehi and strengthen Maldivian nationalism have gained significant momentum.
Central to these efforts is the Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage, created to advance initiatives safeguarding the nation's identity. Among the government's projects are plans to establish a college dedicated to nationalism studies, alongside the revival of the national printing press and the formation of a research team to explore and document Maldivian heritage.
Plans to deepen public appreciation for Dhivehi are also underway, including a nationwide awareness campaign designed to inspire love and respect for the language and its cultural legacy.
