Dr Abdulla Khaleel, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with Dr Ian Borg, Malta's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, during an official visit to Malta on 7 April.

The talks focused on strengthening bilateral ties, advancing shared interests, and deepening collaboration between the two island nations, the Maldives' foreign ministry said in a statement. Environmental sustainability was a key topic, the foreign ministry has said, with both nations reaffirming their commitment to renewable energy and environmental conservation. Discussions also explored potential partnerships in sustainable development, it added.

Economic matters featured prominently, and the foreign ministry stressed the importance of fostering trade, attracting foreign investment, and building a stronger, more inclusive economic partnership. They also expressed enthusiasm for strengthening "people-to-people ties" through collaboration in tourism, fisheries, and higher education. Particular focus was given to expanding cooperation in the education sector as a cornerstone for deeper engagement.

Accompanied by senior officials, including Dr Hala Hameed and Hassan Hussain Shihaab, Minister Khaleel’s visit included meetings with other Maltese officials to explore further opportunities for collaboration.
