Caring for Children with Autism: A Shared Responsibility, Says President Dr Muizzu

Embracing society’s collective role in nurturing and supporting children with autism is a national responsibility, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated, affirming that every child, irrespective of neurological differences, holds equal value and deserves opportunities to flourish. His remarks, shared on social media, marked the global observance of World Autism Awareness Day on 2 April.

Established in 2007, World Autism Awareness Day is observed annually to raise awareness of autism spectrum disorders (ASD), promote understanding, and foster acceptance. The day serves as a global call to action, encouraging communities to offer support and inclusion for autistic individuals and their families.

Highlighting the unique skills and qualities of children with ASD, President Dr Muizzu described them as possessing exceptional abilities and making meaningful contributions to society. Nurturing children with autism, the president has said, is a shared duty and a national responsibility that calls for all members of society to provide care and support.

This year’s World Autism Awareness Day carries the theme, “Advancing Neurodiversity and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).” It reflects the intersection of autism advocacy with global sustainability initiatives, highlighting the importance of inclusivity and accessibility in achieving quality education, reducing inequalities, and ensuring decent work opportunities.

In the Maldives, 168 children with autism are currently registered with the Autism Association of Maldives, receiving services tailored to their needs.
