Gov’t. Invites Bids for Tourism Projects in Kelaa and Kaashidhoo

The Ministry of Tourism and Environment has opened tenders for the development and operation of tourist resorts in the lagoons of Kelaa, Haa Alifu Atoll, and Kaashidhoo, Kaafu Atoll.

The initiative encompasses the construction of two resorts within Kelaa's lagoon and one in Kaashidhoo. Through a presidential decree issued on 29 March, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu allocated 325.5 hectares in Kelaa’s lagoon for this purpose, divided into two zones of 156.2 hectares and 169.3 hectares, respectively. In Kaashidhoo’s lagoon, 115.21 hectares have been designated for the development of a tourism facility.

The ministry has scheduled virtual information sessions for prospective participants on 15 April and 6 May. According to the ministry, interested parties must submit their intent to attend by email no later than 12 p.m. on 14 April for the first session and 12 p.m. on 5 May for the second. The deadline for tender submissions is 5 June, and application forms for tender documents can be accessed via the Ministry’s official website.

President Dr Muizzu’s decision to earmark areas in Kelaa for tourism development fulfils an electoral pledge to foster economic growth in the region. During a visit to the island in February 2024, he further committed to launching an agricultural project aimed at supporting the local community.
