President Dr Muizzu Allocates 325.5 Hectares of Kelaa Lagoon for Resort Projects

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has issued a presidential decree designating 325.5 hectares from the lagoon of Kelaa, located in Haa Alifu Atoll, for the development of two new tourist resorts. This initiative represents a pivotal step in fulfilling his administration's electoral promise to designate an area in Kelaa for tourism development.

The decision was formally announced by the President's Office, which also disclosed the publication of an official map detailing the revised jurisdiction of Kelaa. The allocation of 325.5 hectares from Kelaa's lagoon for tourism development was enacted through a presidential decree under Section 56-1(a) of the Decentralisation Act, underscoring the president's authority to redefine the jurisdiction of local councils.

During a visit to Kelaa in February 2024, President Dr Muizzu engaged with local residents and pledged to launch a large-scale tourism project in the island's lagoon. He highlighted the untapped potential of Kelaa for tourism, assuring the community that the initiative would generate substantial employment opportunities for the island's youth.

The president also addressed the ongoing tourism zone development on the island, underscoring his administration's commitment to accelerating its progress. Recognising the community's deep-rooted connection to agriculture, he also outlined plans for an agricultural initiative designed to enhance local production—a priority within the government's broader strategy to strengthen the agricultural sector.

On 3 April 2024, the Ministry of Tourism and Environment and the Kelaa Island Council formalised these efforts by signing an agreement to allocate lagoon space for tourism facilities.
