Human Rights Watchdog Censures Local Station For Mocking Disability

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has urged local media to act in a manner that does not violate human rights and human dignity.

HRCM’s statement came after a local TV station on Saturday night aired a programme during which the host and guests mocked and ridiculed people with disabilities, describing them as inferior and unintelligent.

HRCM in a post on its social media platforms reminded local media that everyone has the right to live with dignity and respect.

The Commission also urged all media outlets to ensure that their content does not violate the human rights and human dignity of any individual in the society.

The HRCM has called on the relevant authorities to investigate such violations by the media.
