Islamic Ministry to Establish Libraries in Islamic Centres Across the Maldives

Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed announced that libraries will be established in Islamic centers across the country this year.

The Minister made the announcement during a signing ceremony for the construction of an Islamic Centre in Milandhoo, Shaviyani Atoll, which was handed over to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).

The contract was signed by Minister Shaheem on behalf of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, and by MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Saudhy. MTCC was awarded the contract under a design-and-build policy.

At the ceremony, Minister Shaheem emphasized that although Islamic centers have been set up in various islands, many have not been fully utilized. To maximize their potential, the current government has begun offering courses from the Islamic University of Maldives at centers in Thinadhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, and Ungoofaaru, Raa Atoll. The Minister also revealed plans to establish libraries in all existing Islamic centers nationwide.

"The first library will be set up at the Salman Centre, with plans to open it next month. Following that, libraries will be introduced in Thinadhoo and Ungoofaaru,” the Minister said.

Additionally, the Minister highlighted that ongoing projects to develop Islamic centres in Addu City and Dhidhdhoo of Haa Alifu Atoll, are expected to be completed within the year.

Regarding the Milandhoo Islamic Centre, the Minister said the construction of the centre is being carried out in response to the requests of the island’s residents, and in line with President Muizzu’s pledges. He expressed hope that the project would be completed at the earliest.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Saudhy said the company will work to complete the work within the contractual deadline.

"MTCC is currently handling about 400 projects. However, we will ensure that this project receives the attention it deserves by increasing the company's capacity to effectively carry out the project,” he stated.
