Gov’t Delivers on Presidential Pledge with ATMs in Four More Islands

Government on Monday delivered on President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to inaugurate ATM services in four more islands across Haa Alifu Atoll.

Less than 60 days after President Dr Muizzu pledged ATM service for Utheemu, Haa Alifu Atoll, Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed inaugurated the island’s new ATM on Monday.

Bank of Maldives (BML) CEO Mohamed Shareef said easier access to such banking services will fuel economic and trade growth in the island.

This service will provide residents with a convenient and reliable way to manage their everyday banking needs, providing cash deposit, withdrawal, transfer and payment services 24/7, he added.

In addition to Utheemu, ATM services were inaugurated in Maarandhoo, Muraidhoo and Thakandhoo of the same Atoll.

This initiative is part of President Dr Muizzu’s broader strategy, launched in November 2024, to establish ATMs on all inhabited islands. The initiative is aimed at strengthening financial empowerment among the populace. The administration has set a target to introduce ATM services on all inhabited islands by the end of 2025.

At present, the Bank of Maldives operates over 150 ATMs across 90 islands, with plans to extend this service to an additional 17 islands by March of this year.
