The national airline, Maldivian, has announced plans to launch a new 'Premium Economy' class on its domestic routes. Scheduled to debut on 13 April, the initiative, the airline has said, seeks to redefine the travel experience by prioritising comfort and convenience.
In its statement, the airline highlighted the significance of this upgrade. "This new offering is designed to enhance convenience and comfort, providing passengers with an improved travel experience," Maldivian said, framing the move as a pivotal step in raising service standards. The Premium Economy class is part of a broader effort to ensure ease and satisfaction for travellers, it added.
Passengers opting for Premium Economy will enjoy an expanded range of benefits designed to streamline their journeys. Key features include a 25-kilogram baggage allowance, one complimentary date change, and priority check-in, catering to travellers seeking a hassle-free experience. Enhanced seating arrangements offer additional comfort, the airline has said, while the in-flight menu will feature curated snacks and beverages tailored to premium travel.
Complementing the in-flight enhancements are exclusive privileges at domestic airports. Premium Economy passengers, according to the national flag carrier, will benefit from expedited check-in and boarding services, along with access to lounges at Malé, Dharavandhoo, and Ifuru. Baggage handling procedures have also been optimised to ensure passengers in this class receive their luggage promptly upon arrival, it added.
Bookings for premium economy seats are now open through the airline's website, mobile application, and official booking channels. The rollout coincides with Maldivian's expanded fleet capabilities, underscored by its recently acquired wide-body aircraft.
Inaugurated on 6 January, the aircraft serves international routes connecting the Maldives to Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu, China. Its addition reflects a commitment to operational growth, a priority outlined under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's administration. Maldivian's ambitions extend further, with plans to acquire another wide-body aircraft and introduce direct connections to select European destinations.
