The construction of waste management centres on four islands have been contracted to a local company.
The Ministry of Tourism and Environment awarded the contracts to Sunny Land Investment at a ceremony held Wednesday. The company will be constructing waste management centres in Himandhoo, Thoddoo and Feridhoo of Alifu Alifu Atoll, and Kaashidhoo of Kaafu Atoll. These islands are part of Zone 3 islands under the Environment Ministry’s Greater Male’ Environmental Improvement and Waste Management Project.
Speaking at the contract signing ceremony, Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim said the government’s goal is to establish a waste management system in every inhabited island. While efforts are underway to achieve this vision, waste management centres will be established on even more islands in the coming days, he noted.
The Minister said the Ministry would soon provide the necessary waste management equipment and resources to the islands, with equipment having already received the required equipment. He noted that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s objective is to establish waste management centres in all islands by the end of the year, and urged island councils to give their full cooperation to the project.
The Greater Male’ Environmental Improvement and Waste Management Project is implemented by the Ministry with funding through grants and loans from the Asian Development Bank and other international donors. The main objective of this project is to establish a sustainable and environmentally friendly waste and resource management system in the islands of Zone 3, comprising of islands in Kaafu, Alifu Alifu, Alifu Dhaalu and Vaavu Atoll.
