No Present Concern, Maldives Downplays Counter-Terrorism Operation

The government has moved quickly to reassure the safety of visitors following a major counter terrorism operation in the capital Male’.

Maldives Police Service (MPS) and Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), began a major Counter-Terrorism Operation in the greater Malé area on Monday night.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement said three individuals have been arrested in connection with the operation while locations and vehicles are being searched under court warrants.

The statement said such operations are routinely conducted in line with intelligence reports, as preventive measures, to ensure the safety and security of the Maldives.

“While the operation is still ongoing, there exists no present concern at this time,” the Ministry said.

“The Government assures its commitment to upholding the safety and assuring the protection of all residing in the country.”

The Ministry also assured that local authorities will continue to monitor and take swift action on any information on threats received, to ensure that the Maldives remains a safe, secure and peaceful destination for its residents, and visitors.
