JSC Invites Nominations for Supreme Court Bench

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has invited nominations as it looks to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court bench.

JSC said nominations can be submitted through its ‘Fahires’ online until Wednesday at 11:00am.

A spot on the apex court was vacated after Judge Husnu Suood resigned on 4 February. Suood had resigned amid a JSC investigation into multiple investigations of corruption and abuse of power against him.

The criteria for the post of Supreme Court judge include being at least thirty years of age and having a first degree in Islamic Sharia or Law. A candidate must also have at least seven years of experience as a lower court judge or as a lawyer.

The seven judge bench currently comprises Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan and Justice Dr Azmiraldha Zahir, Justice Mahaz Ali Zahir, Justice Aisha Shujoon Mohammed, Justice Ali Rasheed Hussain and Justice Dr Mohamed Ibrahim.

However, Justice Dr Azmiraldha and Justice Mahaz remain suspended by the JSC pending an investigation by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC).
