Supreme Court upholds Ahmed Murrath's death sentence

The Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld the conviction and death sentence of Ahmed Murrath over the murder of lawyer Ahmed Najeeb. The five-judge bench of the Supreme Court unanimously upheld the conviction and death sentence against Murrath.

As per the law, the sentence passed on Murrath has to be implemented within 30 days of the apex court verdict. The Islamic Ministry can, however, act as a mediator between the victim’s family and the accused to seek a pardon during this period.

This is the second time the Supreme Court has upheld a death penalty verdict by a lower court. The Supreme Court earlier upheld the death sentence of Hussein Humam who was convicted of killing former Ungoofaaru Lawmaker and religious scholar Dr. Afrasheem Ali.
