Parliament has progressed the nominations submitted by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu for the appointments of Maldivian ambassadors to Russia and Morocco. During Monday’s parliamentary session, the Foreign Relations Committee was assigned the task of conducting a comprehensive review of these nominations. This phase in the approval process is mandated by the Foreign Service Act.
Lt. General (Retd) Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef has been nominated as the ambassador to Russia. Currently, he also serves as the Maldives' ambassador to Türkiye. Additionally, President Dr Muizzu proposed the appointment of Ahmed Sareer as the ambassador to Morocco. Sareer currently holds the position of Maldives’ ambassador to Saudi Arabia.
As stipulated by the Foreign Service Act, it is imperative for the president to obtain parliamentary approval before appointing ambassadors and high commissioners to the nation’s foreign missions. The Foreign Relations Committee will now conduct a detailed review of the nominations, after which they will be presented for a parliamentary vote.
