Maldives to Light Up More Islands For Eid

Two more islands from every Atoll will be lit up as part of this year’s Eid al-Fitr celebrations, Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works, Adam Shareef Umar revealed Thursday.

Speaking during a press conference on Thursday, Minister Adam Shareef said similar to last year, preparations are already underway for the colourful and grand celebration of this Eid.

Under the special directive of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, 'Eid Ali', an initiative was launched aimed at illuminating islands across the Maldives with festive lights, representing Islamic symbols.

Additionally, the government resolved to install festive lighting in all cities and atoll administrative capitals across the Maldives, further enhancing the spirit of celebration.

This year, the additional islands will be identified based on the population, he said.

"Last time we sent lights mainly to the Atoll capitals. In addition to that, this year we are sending Eid lights to two islands from each Atoll. We have already sent lights to certain islands in Addu and Fuvahmulah. The President is personally gifting lights to 36 different islands from the remaining Atolls,” he explained.

The lights donated to the islands and councils can be used for various occasions, the Minister said, adding that such investments are important to bring joy to the people.

The "Eid Ali" initiative was first held in the capital Male’ when President Dr Muizzu was Mayor. As the initiative was well received by the public, President Dr Muizzu expanded the initiative to all parts of the country after assuming office.
