There is a critical need for the engagement of women and youth in the fisheries and agricultural sectors, which is essential for their advancement and development, stated Dr Maryam Mariya, Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare. She made the statement in her address to the 48th session of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Governing Council. The session, conducted on 12 and 13 February at IFAD's headquarters in Rome, Italy, centred around the theme "Eradicating Hunger and Poverty by 2030."
Minister Mariya brought attention to the significant proposals presented to confront the challenges within the agricultural sector, engaging in in-depth deliberations on potential solutions. She underscored the pivotal role played by small island states in the agricultural and ocean resources sectors.
Addressing the substantial challenges posed by climate change, Minister Mariya underscored the necessity of enhancing the resilience of small island states and fostering unity in addressing these issues. Climate change, she noted, remains one of the most critical threats to the development of these states.
Minister Mariya also highlighted the connection between food security and youth education, advocating for comprehensive education for children on food-related matters. She linked this initiative with the healthcare policies of small island states, stressing the importance of a coordinated approach to ensuring robust food security.
"The significance of increasing the participation of women and youth in the agricultural and fisheries sectors is clearly evident in the research on the sustainable development of small island states," she stated.
Minister Mariya further noted the unanimous agreement among IFAD Governing Council participants on the urgent need for swift action to secure food security, ensure sustainable agricultural development, and manage ocean resources responsibly. The session convened ministers, representatives of nation states, and agricultural experts to share invaluable insights and experiences aimed at advancing agricultural development.
