Maldives Prioritises Military Strength and Regional Security, Says Defence State Minister

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s vision is to enhance the capabilities of the Maldivian army while assuring friendly nations of the security of the Indian Ocean, the Minister of State for Defence, Muaz Haleem has stated.

Speaking at the meeting of Defence Ministers’ meeting on the sidelines of the Aerospace India Exhibition, Minister of State for Defence Muaz stressed the importance of strengthening defence ties. He stated that it is not only military threats that countries face in today’s changing world, but also threats such as cybersecurity and rapidly evolving warfare technologies.

Muaz further emphasised that India and Maldives have strong relations. Noting the progress being made by India in the defence sector, Muaz acknowledged that India is a global leader in military innovations.

Muaz also stated that the security of the Maldives is not only linked to the military readiness, but also includes maritime security and climate change protection, and the prevention of global organised crime. While all these factors contribute to the Maldives’ security and peace, national and regional security has always been important to the Maldives, he said.

The State Minister assured that the Maldivian government is also working to ensure the safety and security of the region, adding that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s vision is to increase the military capabilities of the country.

"President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's vision of the defence sector includes enhancing our own capabilities and protecting our independence and sovereignty. This will give confidence to our regional allies and other countries in the military capabilities of the Maldivian Army to ensure security in the Indian Ocean,” he explained.

Muaz said all countries should strengthen relations with each other and work together in more areas. This is the path to a brighter and more peaceful future, he said.
