President Advocates for Enhanced Female Participation in STEM

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has issued a clarion call for intensified efforts to bolster the participation of women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). This statement was delivered in his message marking the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

President Dr Muizzu underscored the significance of this commemorative day in reinforcing the nation’s commitment to ensuring equal opportunities and robust support for women in STEM. He highlighted the pivotal role of female scientists and technical experts in combating climate change, advancing sustainable development, and tackling global challenges.

Recognising the achievements of women and girls in scientific fields, the president stressed the importance of providing them with increased opportunities, acknowledging and celebrating their accomplishments, and supporting their ambitions. He reaffirmed his administration's dedication to fostering an innovative and resilient approach among women and girls in science, reiterating the government's commitment to increasing female participation in these critical fields.

The administration’s initiatives aimed at reducing educational disparities and promoting sustainable development goals were also highlighted in President Dr Miuzzu‘s message. These measures, including scholarships, student loan schemes, and the nation’s first free degree programme, according to him, have contributed to advancing these objectives.

Additionally, the president articulated the administration’s objectives to empower a new generation of women by reducing gender disparities. This vision encompasses the establishment of vocational laboratories, career guidance programmes, vocational training opportunities, and enhanced access to higher education for women and girls, he added.

The administration plans to increase the GDP contribution of the digital economy to 15% by 2040 as part of the nation's digital transformation agenda. Citing this, President Dr Muizzu underscored the critical role that women and girls will play in achieving this goal.
