Fehendhoo-Goidho student ferry service resumes

B. Goidhoo Island Council on Sunday decided to resume suspended ferry service for students of Fehendhoo Island.

The service was suspended after Fehendhoo Island Council declared “unsafe’ the small boat used to ferry the students. The service was earlier provided using a small dinghy, the council said.

In a statement released earlier, Fehendhoo Council expressed concern over the use of a dinghy to ferry the students to Goidhoo. The council said it had earlier called for proposals from parties interested in providing ferry service between the islands but there had been no response .

Speaking to PSM, Principal of Goidhoo School Mohamed Nazim said parents were consulted regarding the resumption of ferry services  and the arrangements were being made with with assistance from the Ministry of Education.

He noted that vessels of normal size cannot be used for transport between the two islands, which are in the same lagoon, during low tide, and the only alternative is to use small dinghies.

22 students from Fehendhoo are currently studying at Goidhoo School.
