Islamic Affairs Ministry on Sunday began distributing Zakat al-Fitr to registered recipients in Male’ City. The Ministry said the funds were being distributed from its offices on Sunday and Monday starting 1030AM.
In the event the recipient is unable to collect the money, they can send another person with the recipient’s National ID Card, the Ministry said. In the atolls, Zakat will be distributed through local councils.
According to the Ministry, 50,900 people were registered as poor this year. The Ministry collected over MVR2.7 million as Zakat al-Fitr by June 23.
The Ministry set 2.4 kg of rice as the amount of Nisab or the minimum amount for Zakat al-Fitr, and said Zakat collection will continue till the 28th of Ramadan. For the Male’ region, the amount of Zakat to be paid by an individual is MVR12 for normal Rice, MVR65 for Thailand Rice and MVR77 for Basmati Rice.
The amounts will vary depending on the price of rice in each island, the Ministry added.
