Land reclamation work of Industrial Village ends

Land reclamation work of the proposed-Malé Industrial Village has concluded.

Malé City is one of the smallest capital cities in the world and is home to nearly a third of the country's population, of roughly 400,000 people. It is located in  Kaafu Atoll and is the centre of all commercial activities. It has faced a severe case of congestion due to its small size.

Some of the major issues facing the residents living in Malé arise from having the live in the midst of a bustling environment and industrial activity, and also lack of a proper waste management system. The proposed-Malé Industrial Village project, launched by the Government under its Malé redevelopment plan, aims to address many of these issues, in addition to ease congestion. Providing better living conditions for residents is one of the key pledges of the Government.

The Industrial Village project is undertaken by the Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure, and would see the relocation of garages, workshops, industrial buildings and other such establishments to a secluded area, away from the urban mainland.

The project was contracted to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), and land reclamation work commenced on June 30. Land reclamation work was completed in 3-days, on June 2, which saw the addition of 5 hectares of land to the congested capital, Malé.

The Industrial Village is expected to be officially opened late July, coinciding with Independence Day celebrations.
