The Maldives' Third Climate Action Plan will reflect the country's leadership and commitment on the international stage, Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim has stated. The Minister made the remarks during a workshop held to present the new action plan.
Under the Paris Agreement of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, to which the Maldives is party, each country is required to submit an action plan every five years.
The Maldives' latest Climate Action Plan has set new targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It also includes strategies to further promote and strengthen the Maldives' efforts to combat climate change.
Speaking at the workshop, Minister Thoriq highlighted the significance of the plan to shape the Maldives' future. In his speech, the Minister noted that workshops were held in different parts of the Maldives to identify the national and regional objectives set out in the plan.
Although the Maldives is a relatively low carbon-emitting country, the targets set in the Maldives' new Climate Action Plan are very promising, the Minister noted. He stated that the plan reflects the Maldives' proactive leadership in addressing climate challenges.
The Environment Ministry said the plan includes key areas that are essential for the Maldives' development and those that require the attention and cooperation of the international community to adapt to climate change and increase resilience.
During the workshop, the Ministry of Environment shared the work undertaken to prepare the Climate Action Plan. In addition, a session was held to discuss key areas for the successful implementation of the plan. These include finance, technology, climate empowerment, gender, children and youth and climate advocacy, education and awareness.
The Ministry of Environment stresses that the Maldives will need financial, technological and capacity-building assistance from international donors to achieve the goals set out in the new plan. The Ministry further noted that the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement will facilitate the Maldives' achievement of sustainable development in line with global climate commitments.
